Tracing its roots to 1889, the college has historically been on the cutting edge of technology and innovation in clinical training. In that vein, the college sought to revitalize other, non-classroom spaces important to faculty, students and staff. KZF worked with UC and SmithGroupJJR to re-imagine the College’s office environment, transitioning from a traditional layout to open office, with the goal to design a workplace of the future. The benefits include optimizing use and agility of space, maximizing technology, supporting the organizational culture and nurturing an organic sphere of collaboration to engender a multidisciplinary approach to problem-solving. The renovation includes built-in ‘living’ and gathering spaces, embedded technology throughout, and more access to natural light – improving employee mobility and well-being. Open interaction and communication with end-users was a critical component of the project, to ensure the new office design responded to the unique organizational and functional needs of the college and facilitate the ease of transition to the new space.
