KZF Design has teamed with SFCS Architects in Roanoke to design a new Fire Station No. 7 for the Roanoke Fire Department, replacing the current No. 7 station. Located in the historic Grandin Commercial District, the design of this new station incorporates overall massing, roof design and masonry detailing that emulates the former station and reinforces its location as an anchor to the historic district. The design team worked with the fire department and city administration to overcome community concerns relative to the replacement of the former station, meeting the requirements for a new state-of-the-art modern fire station within the context of its neighborhood.

The new 16,000 SF station includes three drive-through apparatus bays, living quarters for nine full-time crew, a combined training/community/dayroom, and fitness room in addition to operations support spaces. The new station incorporates the latest trends in addressing health concerns of firefighting personnel including toilet/shower/laundry facilities adjoining the apparatus bays to mitigate transfer of contaminants from operations to living quarters.
